Passing Plateaus
Expert help for when your body stalls
Biggest Loser Club fitness expert Maria Patella knows how frustrating it is to hit a plateau in your weight loss. While no one is certain why the body chooses to "shut down" at certain points in your weight-loss plan, Maria says experts do have a theory: "We see again and again that over-exercise and under-eating, in an effort to lose more weight quickly, can shut down weight loss," Maria says. "And that is why consistency is more important than doing a lot for a short time."
Maria says for this reason, the worst mistake dieters make is allowing the numbers on the scale to discourage them: "Many times folks quit when their body is just taking a rest," Maria says. "It may be 'wondering' whether or not the lower calories and increased exercise are going to continue. And when they don't, the body happily gains again."
Maria says the best thing to do is to continue to eat right and exercise even when the weight loss has slowed down. "You send a signal to the body that it needs to adapt because the healthy habits are here to stay," Maria says.
Maria says sometime it takes weeks for the body to kick back in and surpass the "magical" metabolic threshold, but a new level of fitness lies beyond that as long as you don't give up.
Maria's advice? "Hang in there, what matters most is what you do over time."
I am a mom with PCOS who likes to workout. I have two boys one with ADHD and AUDHD. An adult daughter that keeps me sane and another adult son who lives out of state.
